Fungal nail infection (onychomycosis) is a common condition affecting approximately 2–13% of adults. It is most often caused by dermatophyte fungi, with the majority of cases linked to Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and Epidermophyton floccosum.


Nail changes caused by trauma, psoriasis, eczema, and other skin conditions can closely resemble fungal infection. For this reason, treatment should not be started without confirmation of diagnosis.

Dermatophyte Test Strip (DTS)

A small sample of nail material is taken and tested during your appointment. The process is quick, simple, and non-invasive, with results available in approximately 5 minutes.


The DTS test helps confirm whether a fungal infection is present, allowing appropriate management decisions to be made.

What to Expect


A small sample is taken from the affected nail during your appointment and tested in clinic using the DTS system. The procedure is quick and generally painless.


Once results are available, your podiatrist will explain the findings and discuss appropriate next steps. If a fungal infection is confirmed, a management plan will be discussed based on the severity of the condition and your individual needs. This may include podiatry-led care, topical therapy advice, and/or referral to your GP if prescription-only medication is considered appropriate.


If the test is negative, alternative causes of nail changes will be considered and appropriate advice provided.

To ensure accurate assessment and effective testing, all nail varnish, gels, acrylics, and cosmetic nail coatings must be fully removed prior to your appointment. This allows proper examination of the nail and improves the reliability of the test result.
